If all the tree trunks were painted at the same strength they would act like a physical fence, stopping your eye from travelling into the depth of the picture. Instead, the foreground tree against the blue window has harder edges and darker tones to the trunk. Further down the street, the tree trunks are softer-edged and in cooler colours, while the foliage becomes a soft, diffuse mass.

Notice how the perspective lines on the road move from hard in the foreground to soft in the middle distance. They begin warm and hard-edged, becoming cooler as they recede and finally tailing off into a series of soft-edged dashes.
